Built into the rock face of a cave overlooking the beautiful coastline of Sea Caves and Coral Bay you will find Spilies Tavern and bar. The cave forms a very unusual backdrop to the tavern, open dining terrace and pool area. On arrival we were greeted warmly by Stella, our host for the evening. The Menu covers a range of snacks, light meals, grills, desserts and Cypriot specialities. It includes burgers, salads, omelettes, pork and lamb chops, fish dishes and meze. The drinks menu has all of the usual suspects as well as a selection of local wines. Both the food and drinks are very reasonably priced. We chose a meat meze as this was a speciality of the house. The feast started with village bread and a really fresh fetta salad served with a selection of side dishes which included tahini, taramosalata , olives and home made pickled celery and hot chillies. The large black olives, which we later learnt had been prepared by Stella’s mother in Law, were particularly good and flavoursome being a little sweeter than usual. Dishes of lightly cooked cous cous and delicately stuffed vine leaves were quickly followed by a dish of grilled halloumi and lounza, a very tasty combination of locally smoked pork and cheese. Next came a clay pot full of chicken casserole with onions, peppers and tomatoes, as well as lightly browned sauté potatoes, stuffed artichokes, grilled courgettes, slices of kolokassi and cheese bites consisting of a softer cheese wrapped in bacon slices. After a short pause, home made garlic sausages, lamb chops and chicken breasts arrived straight from the grill to complete this extensive array of food. The meal was complimented by a carafe of the house red, an excellent recommendation made by Stella. By now we were really struggling to eat anymore until our host mentioned homemade Baklava and being the troopers we are we decided to split a portion between us. It was absolutely delicious and we had no difficulty at all in finishing it off. This was an interesting and very different meze and the tavern prides itself in varying the dishes according to the seasonal vegetables available at the time. Expect to be given between 12 to 15 dishes and make sure your appetite is well honed in advance. We certainly enjoyed our feast as well as the hospitality of our host.
